Description
The Nikon SB-5000 AF Speedlight is Nikon's flagship radio-controlled flash, built for the Creative Lighting System (CLS). It works with both radio control and conventional optical communication, so you can build wireless multiple-flash setups even in bright sunlight or where obstacles block line of sight - radio control reaches approximately 30m.
Power is generous: a guide number of 34.5m (113ft) at the 35mm zoom position, rising to 55m (180ft) at 200mm (ISO 100, FX format, standard illumination pattern). The zoom head covers 24-200mm lenses, extending to 14mm with the built-in wide panel, and three illumination patterns - standard, even and centre-weighted - adapt the light distribution to the camera's FX or DX image area.
As a commander or remote, the SB-5000 controls wireless groups (master plus 6 groups by radio, master plus 3 groups optically), supports i-TTL balanced fill-flash with CLS-compatible cameras, and offers test firing, monitor pre-flashes, AF-assist illumination for multi-point AF and a modelling illuminator. The head tilts from -7 degrees to 90 degrees and rotates 180 degrees left and right for full bounce control.
Recycling takes about 1.8 seconds with Ni-MH (2600mAh) batteries or 2.6 seconds with AA alkaline batteries, with flash compensation of -3.0 to +3.0 EV in 1/3 steps and an improved thermal cut-out for extended shooting. It runs on four AA batteries (optional SD-9 battery pack supported) and weighs about 420g without batteries.
